Award-winning author, novelist, and highly acclaimed lecturer to speak on the SouthCoast this month

James Carroll may arguably be one of the greatest modern minds to have taken on the task of deciphering the relationship between Christianity and Judaism over the last 50 years.

His background; the son of an Air Force general—who served as the Director of the Defense Intelligence Agency, may at first glance, appear to be an odd influencer on a man who has been described as sensitive and thoughtful. However, in reality, what shaped this man’s morality and understanding of humankind, may be traced back to his time spent at Georgetown University and St. Paul’s College, (the Paulist Fathers’ seminary in Washington). Ordained into the Catholic priesthood in 1969—who later left the order to write in the mid-seventies, he shares his passion for teaching and discussing his views through volumes of published articles, best-selling novels, and non-fiction works.

A world traveler, skilled researcher and author, Carroll has given many of faith, a sense of hope, enlightenment, and understanding of humanity’s effort to make sense of creation and events which shape our world and its politics. He has also raised the ire of those who question his insights into religious morality—or better, responsibility.

His deep understanding and unraveling of history, religion, and convictions of the Catholic Church’s top echelon reveal an uneasy relationship with the Jewish community which has led to the rise of anti-semitism persisting to this very day.

Carroll’s understanding of his subject is unmatched in his pursuit in pointing out flaws within us all. It is because of this; he is one of the most potent arbiters of righteousness.

With recent political actions, conflict, and civil unrest in the Holy Land this newsworthy event is well suited for literary, religious, and political communities. Attendees will gain valuable insight into the result of the United States moving their Embassy to Jerusalem, and the recent military intervention between Israel and the Palestinians.

Much is to be learned by an esteemed writer who has recently returned from Israel and who will share his views on the future of this historic action.

All are invited to attend Rabbi Bernard and Minna Ziskind, and Shulamith Friedland Lecture at Tifereth Israel Congregation, 145 Brownell Avenue, New Bedford, Massachusetts, on Sunday, June 3 at 7 p.m. There is no charge, and a reception will follow. James Carroll, the keynote speaker, will offer a rare and thoughtful discussion on the aforementioned topics.
